APOGEE

Learn about APOGEE

Derivative terms are often used to identify the body being orbited. The most common is apogee, referring to orbits around the Earth  and perihelion referring to orbits around the Sun (Greek ἥλιος “sun”).

The point in an orbit around the Earth that is most distant from the Earth, more generally, it is the point in an orbit that is most distant from the centre.

At its apogee, the satellite travels slower than at any other point in its orbit. The opposite of apogee is perigee.

What is an Apogee Kick?

Most orbits are not classified as perfectly circular. All orbits are ellipses  with a high point (apogee) and a low point (perigee).

At apogee, when the satellite is at its furthest point from the earth, it is going the slowest and is ready to fall back toward the earth.

As the satellite falls it will gain rapid speed, and usually overshoots the earth, swinging at a quick pace through and then gaining altitude back toward apogee.

The satellite wont stay in orbit at the apogee mainly because it isn’t going fast enough when it reaches that point.
